Lactose intolerance is caused by a deficiency of a key enzyme, known as lactase, that helps to break down dairy products in your GI tract. Lactose intolerant people have a hard time digesting lactose, a kind of naturally occurring sugar found in milk, cheese and other dairy products. Some people develop a more serious dairy intolerance than others. You can become lactose intolerant at any age.
